Q. I normally use a wheelchair. But I am currently bed-bound. So I’m spending a lot of time on the couch. The back of my head is pointed toward the door, so I cannot see when someone knocks on it. I would like to set up a camera so I can see who is there. Do you have any suggestions?

A. I’m sorry to hear you’re confined to the couch. That must be difficult. And I don’t blame you for wanting to know who’s at your door.

Fortunately, you have many options for setting up a camera to see who is knocking. The right solution just depends on your situation.

First, home improvement stores often sell surveillance cameras. These consist of a camera and a monitor that resembles a small television. The camera may be wired or wireless.

These cameras are intended for the very purpose you mentioned. You position the camera by the door. When someone knocks, you just look at the monitor. You can decide whether to let the person in or not.

You can pick up one of these for less than $100. They’ve been around for a while, so they’re not leading edge technology. You can probably also find a better solution.

For example, you can pick up an inexpensive Webcam for about $40 or so. This would connect to the USB port on your computer. Depending on where you want to position the Webcam, you may need a USB extension cable.

With the Webcam software, you can view video from the camera directly on the computer screen. This setup is handy if you have a laptop. You also can use the Webcam to chat with friends and family over the Internet.

If you’re looking for a more robust security solution, I suggest a network camera. You can use these to monitor your home when you’re not there.

Network cameras can be wired or wireless. They connect directly to your network. Then, you can connect to them via the Internet. That way, you can see what’s going on. Some also feature intercom features.

A network camera may be overkill for your situation. It sounds like you’re just looking for a temporary solution. But, if you’re looking for a long-term security solution, a network camera is the way to go.
