Report of BB gun prompts schools lock-down/nr/Gough 03/26/2008

Staff at Graber Elementary School on Hutchinson ’s north side saw what they believed was a man shooting some sort of gun into a tree at mid afternoon Wednesday, prompting USD 308 officials to lock down the school. The school is adjacent to an apartment complex, and the individual was seen going back into the apartments. In fact the back of the apartments is adjacent to the school playground.

Hutchinson High School , which is about a block away from Graber, also went into lockdown as a precaution.

Hutchinson Police were called to the scene and immediately began a search. Officers interviewed several residents of the nearby apartments. Ultimately, officers were able to identify a suspect in the case and found the BB gun. The individual was issued a municipal court summons for discharging a BB gun in the Hutchinson city limits. He has been identified as 18-year-old Cody E, Henderson of 706 15th Circle.

Police Chief Dick Heitschmidt said nearly every office on duty responded and closed off the area of 15th Circle and Cleveland.

Both Graber and Hutchinson High School remained under lock down for about an hour, which extended past the normal release time for Graber.

The following note was sent home with students at Graber Wednesday afternoon.

"Today at approximately 2:15 it was reported by one of our staff members than a man outside of the neighborhood apartments had a gun and was shooting at a bird nest in a tree. All students were brought inside of the building and a 911 call was placed. The Hutchinson Police Department responded and Graber Elementary School was placed in lock down. Students were not dismissed until police officially released the school from lock down."

Parents with kids at Graber lined up with their vehicles causing a traffic nightmare on Cleveland, but even 15 th Circle and 14 th street. This is also located near Hutchinson Community College and the dorms for the college.

Officials say no kids were ever in danger, but the lockdown in a situation like this is done as a precaution.
