Full Version: Problems with your photos? Adjust the ISO

Betty in Kansas City, MO, called with a question about taking pictures. She is having problems taking pictures inside. Her photos are dark. But she doesn't want to use a flash, because it makes things too bright.

Well, Betty, this problem is common. Many people had the same problem with film cameras. With film, the problem seemed easier to resolve. You simply bought a film with a different sensitivity setting.

With digital cameras, you can change the light sensitivity. Check your settings for an ISO entry. If you can't find it, consult your manual.

A setting of 100 is normal. Some cameras go lower. You should be able to increase this to 400 or 800 in increments of 100. The higher the ISO setting, the less light you need. A word of caution: Higher ISOs increase noise in your pictures. This is similar to graininess.
