This is an article that I found and wanted to share as a home tip....enjoy!
Hi I just wanted to let you all know that I am a licensed insurance agent who specializes in auto and home insurance. So you say you don't have a lot of stuff to insure? That's OK. There are a couple of other coverages on the renter's policy that will make you happy you spent the money on the policy.
1. liability - This is if you somehow damage someone else' unit. For instance if you leave the water on and damage the unit below. It also covers you if a visitor is injured in your apartment. I'll bet that you didn't know that your liability coverage follows you in case of an accident too.(not a motor vehicle accident.) I will give you an example: Let's say you were out golfing and you hit a ball through the windshield of an expensive car parked nearby. Your liability coverage would take care of that damage. The basic policy gives you $100,000 worth of liability coverage.
2. Loss of use - This pays for your hotel room, should your apartment be uninhabitable. How many people do you see on TV who are burned out of their apartments and have nowhere to go? On a renter's policy, you can pretty much specify the amount of coverage you want for this.
It's always a good idea to insure your belongings. Even if you think you don't have a lot of stuff, most people underestimate what they have. You will still need money to replace your furniture, etc. The best thing to do is get an endorsement for personal property replacement cost. This is "new for old" coverage on your belongings. That means the insurance comapany will not factor in depreciation when paying a claim for your property. They will match the item as closely as they can and give you the full replacement cost.
One last thing to think about: Renter's insurance is not that expensive. From what I see at work, most of the time it is less than $100.00 per year. That is less than $10.00 a month. So for those of you who think you can't afford it, I say, you can't afford to be without it. It really does pay to plan ahead. If disaster strikes, you will be glad you have this. Coverages and rules do vary from state to state. Please check with an agent in your area for more information.
