Tom in Seattle called the show to ask about Webcasting. His son is getting married and he wants his parents to be able to tune in via the Internet. I told Tom about some Web sites that will host Webcasts.

Well, Tom, I’ve been thinking about your question. I also researched some of the sites that host Webcasts for free. And I’ve decided that this may not be the best way to Webcast the wedding.

These sites are really intended for people who are looking for an audience. I imagine you want to keep the wedding private.

There are a couple of options. First, you could use an instant messaging program that has video. Popular programs like AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger support video. After you set up the Webcam and software, invite your guests to view your Webcam via instant messaging. They should use the same program that you’re using.

The other option is a little more complicated. You can use a security camera. It wasn’t intended for this purpose. But it should work quite nicely. Security cameras connect to the Internet via a router. No computer is needed. Also, you’ll find wireless ones.

Video from the camera can be viewed via the Web. Your guests don’t need to install any software. You provide them with an IP address so they can access the camera. If you want, you can set up multiple cameras. This allows your guests to watch from different angles.

No matter what you decide, give it a test run before the big day!
