Full Version: Need some advice as to how to handle my tenant
almsthr
My tenant has one of those chimineas (I tried to spell it right) or what ever they are called. He burns his trash in it along with lumber scraps he has left over from jobs he does.

I have asked him not to burn his trash because of the smell. I also have asked that if he is going to have a fire, he needs to stay with it. He goes inside and shuts the door and watches TV. Today he left with a fire going, not smoldering, a full fire. I went out with a bucket of water and took care of it quick! My daughter found ashes in her car and her boyfriend found burn marks on his convertable top. He has been told that he will pay for any damage done by that fire.

What do I do, call the fire department? He refuses to listen to anything I say about things because he is paying the rent.

I need the income to pay the mortgage, and I like her, his girlfriend that lives there.

Any advice?

I would call the fire chief and talk to him on how to handle it. See if he can talk to him and keep your name out of it so he can't come back on you but yet they can tell him the who, what for. Sounds like he thinks he can do whatever he wants with no respect to you. Sorry I can't tell you more.

As you know, Carol, my neighbor's home just burned down last week, so fire is a sensitive subject with me. I am in full agreement that you should call the fire chief and explain exactly how you have talked to the man numerous times and how he continues to ignore your warnings and how far the ashes and burn marks have gotten now...

It is getting dangerous now...the next time could be the actual time that your home is destroyed, and you certainly do not want that.

Call the Fire Chief. As in Yesterday.

If your concerned with him possibly leaving without having the income almsthr, maybe cking on the ordances about burning. Here in my town we are only allowed to burn on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12-6pm. Anyone caught burning any other time is fined by the town. Are you neighbors complainging? If so, it is possible to say that this is a neighbor hood issue, not a personal issue.

Another issue, the wood he is burning. Is it treated lumber used in construction of homes, decks, etc? That should NEVER be burnt!!!! It releases those chemicals back into the air and then when it rains those chemicals are put into our soil by run off of the ashes. Not only is he endagering the the burnign of your dwelling, he is also endangering the environment.

We call those Fire Pits and my neighbor has one, I want one!

I would get rid of it if it's a danger to your home or posessions.......
What can he say if it's removed?????? Tell him the Fire Department told you to remove it................(I would)..............

Hope you get this resolved quickly before something bad happens.

Thank you all, I know here you can only burn with a permit, and he is not the type to get one. He just is arrogant, and he didn't show that side when they came to see the apartment or he wouldn't be living there now.

Everyone here has given you good advice Carol. Let us know how things go. Sorry you are having to deal with this. Good luck!

I would let your fire department handle it. Let him get one of those stiff fines a time or two and he will think twice before burning. I would also refuse to renew their lease. If he is showing this kind of contempt for your requests by doing something so obviously dangerous to all the surrounding structures as well as his own, he is not going to show a lot of respect to the inside of that apartment either.

Hopefully he signs a lease with you (Mthly, Yearly).
List a page with Rules that needs to be signed.
I would look more into it. Definatley call the fire department & find out what is what with this. Ask what can be done if you dont think the person has a permit. Cause being he is your tenant, You own the property & you dont want this come & bite ya in the butt in the end.
